well, my move to SF is coming up. I will be driving from PHX . .so probably taking I-10 to I-5 (unless there is a better route?)

What can I expect in terms of driving conditions at this time of year? Are there a lot of steep, winding mountain areas? (I might be driving a small Uhaul and towing my car behind). What about the weather conditions?

I-10 to I-5 (and then 580) shouldn't pose any problems with mountains. I-5 was built specifically to replace 101 as the main arterial route through California for truck traffic. The interior valleys may pose some issues with fog but that's about it.

They're predicting rain and snow at the Grapevine tomorrow and again after Christmas. If you're traveling at those times it will be a little slow but shouldn't be a big deal.

Is the climb up "the grapevine" mostly straight, or is there a lot of winding roads?

Pretty straight! No big deal---just a steep grade!

It's an Interstate Freeway for goodness sake!

Lots of lanes and the grades aren't too steep for semi traffic. The road is engineered for 70 MPH (or higher) traffic.

It's risky, but plenty of people ride them here. Actually, the ONLY time I've been on a motorcycle was in SF, weaving through downtown & the financial district... scared the bejeezus out of me, and I haven't been on one since. However I was afraid of them to begin with, and wouldn't be the best judge! It would get you through traffic, though, which I'm always jealous of in a jam - but I've also witnessed them almost getting hit (a million times) in traffic, so you'd better be a good driver.

Most motorcyclists around here seem to have that mentality. They're constantly weaving in and out of traffic, splitting lanes (which is legal here!) and going at least 90 on the freeway..
