Hi, If I am above 4,000 feet I get dizzy and my heart starts beating rapidly. I would appreciate help if someone can assist me with driving directions from San Francisco to St. Louis to avoid higher elevations.
Thank you. I am also trravelling with two older dogs. We need to stop every 4 to 5 hours. We are leaving in a little less than 2 weeks July 26th.
Thanks
CR

I believe I-10 goes to about 5000 feet. 40, 70, 80, 90 I believe all go above 6000-8000 even 10000 ish. There's no avoiding the high plains and the Rockies. I am sure someone can chime in that knows more than I.

I'd go down I-5 to Los Angeles, then take 40 east.

I don't know if its possible to cross without going above 5,000 ft, much less 4,000.

Its too bad there wasn't a way to get the dogs over to STL. You could have taken the California Zephyr (train) to Chicago. It's 52 hours from Emeryville to Chicago. From there you can rent a car or take a passenger train that goes to STL (and rent a car there).

I just wanted to point out that today is July 4th so July 26th is more than 2 weeks away.

Taking I-5 to LA would involve going over the Grapevine, so that's out.

I-10 hits 5000 feet briefly in eastern Arizona.

And the trains go to high elevations too, and they're not pressurized...

40 East crosses the rockies and goes above 8,000 feet.

Here's one way to do it all at sea level (don't know if they accept pets though):
