As recently as seven years ago, OPD was actually still recommending them, which is why we have one--we considered replacing it recently and then decided it wasn't really a big deal given that there are two windows immediately next to it that you could climb out directly onto the ground, so the escape factor wasn't likely to be a concern. (FWIW while I believe they are a code violation on the books these days, ours has been seen by inspectors multiple times in the last few years and no one has cared in the slightest.) I probably should learn to keep the key in the lock at least at night, though...

In my home and that of family members we all have double cylinder deadbolts.

I had to remove all of them in the rentals I manage... even on backdoors or service porch entrances.

Though I was done and a few months ago there is a trash enclosure for 3-plex I manage and going back to the 80's this security type door has only had a double deadbolt.

City Inspector cited me for and came back to verify I had removed it...

Now anyone only has to reach around or climb over to open the gate from the thumb latch side...

Just shows renters have a different city enforced standard than home owners...

By the way.. there are $400 double cylinder key capture deadbolts that are still allowed because it captures the key when locked from the inside... had to go round and round with an inspector on this before he understood...

Only experience is with Oakland and Hayward...
