Hi!

My name is Persephone I've been a tenant of this apartment in Oakland since April 2012 I noticed that there was mold in the tub . So I contacted a housing but the representative told me he had mold in his bathroom to so I should just scrub it often. Which I've been doing but it just keeps reappearing. I had a scheduled weatherization from PG&E and they accessed that the apartment has poor ventilation so they cut the gas line. I've been without heat for about 3 months which it has been the summer so I really haven't used the heat . I believe my water hasn't been hot ever since. The owner was contacted after the problem was accessed she asked if I could contact a specialist who does free estimates . I tried but no one did free estimates, so I've been just here with a cut gasline. I also tried to get her to change the carpet due to life of it she stars I should steam clean it twice a year myself. There are crack coming from the top of the wall heater up the hall with like a black substance coming out of it. Im like caught in a web because I don't know which way to move since all these owners issues are placed on a tenant like me. Someone please rescue me!

I contacted PG&E they stated that my gasline to my wall heater was turned off April 29 due to the heater heating up to much and not passing the match test .. Also the water heater has metal corrosion plus needs to be rewrapped

Maybe try calling the city "Housing Condition Complaints (Code Enforcement)" number listed on the link below and if that doesn't help then the "rent adjustment program" number. I think they should be able to help you or refer you to the right resources if your landlord has not been willing to fix the problems.

You'll find links to both S.F. and East Bay tenant resources on this web site, maintained by a local law firm: Tenant Resources | Crow & Rose | Tenant Lawyers

Something sounds off... way off.

No heat is a Habitability issue and Oakland Housing will abate Landlord rent if not corrected in a time specific period.

Go down to Harrison Street with a copy of the PGE red tag and present it at the OHA office.

Bathtub mold and having no heat are two very different issues.

Yes, something sounds off here.

The OP should find plenty of contractor willing to give free estimates. I have had all kinds of jobs done to my house and a free estimate is pretty much industry standards.

No heat is a big no-no and I don't understand any landlord who would purposely drag this on.

Bottom line is that it's the landlord's problem too, if the tenant is having issue handing it then the tenant should contact the landlord and say, Hey you need to take this one.

There seems to be three different issues: mold, furnace, and water heater. Of the three, replacing the furnace is the most important. It sounds to me that having all three issues are overwhelming the OP, so let's focus on fixing the furnace and take care of the rest after.
