I'll be arriving to the bay area from Virginia in about a week and a half to start a new job. Living in San Jose, but upon arriving with my fiancee, we'll have a few days to settle in and explore the area before I begin work and before she flies back to the DC area (unfortunately she won't be moving out until the summer due to grad school).

Anyhow, hoping to spend a day in SF, since neither of us has been there before. It'll probably be Friday, Jan 4th. Is Union Square a good place to park and set out from? I figure if we can find parking there, we would then have the option of riding an F street car or the PM or PH cable car to Fisherman's Wharf, etc. Should I avoid trying to drive in SF and find parking and just settle on BART from SFO or Millbrae? I don't mind city driving (especially with the help of GPS), but I'm concerned about parking availability on a Friday.

Advice? Suggestions for sights to see? Restaurants? We may do Alcatraz. Heard good things about the Ferry Building Marketplace too. How about Nob Hill?

Thanks all.

It should be fine next week. It's a madhouse right now with the Christmas shopping. If I recall correctly it's $25 to park there for the day. However, if you're wanting to go to a lot of spread out destinations I would probably just drive rather than park and rely on public transportation. Public transportation will suck up a lot of time that could be used to see the city.

I was just going to say the same thing to the OP. Also, should the OP decide to park in Union Square to explore that area, the parking garage is located under the square. Drive around it until you see the entrance.
