Airbnb is officially legal in San Francisco - Fortune

So apparently it is now legal in San Francisco. What do you guys think about this? Does this violate the housing codes? So are they going to have to rewrite the housing codes? Are they going to rewrite the building codes so landlords and owners can renovate their structures accordlingly.

If people want to profit off short term rentals on their property, so be it.

Just don't expect to be protected if they get sued for having seedy characters live in a communal building.

I was wondering wtf was wrong with Feinstein being against the legislation... couldn't figure out why a spendcrazy liberal would be against more tax revenue. Makes more sense knowing she's just anti-airbnb though.

I don't have a real strong stance against or for Airbnb.

Feinstein is probably against it because it's anti hotel union and anti rent control. Why rent out the house/apartment on a yearly basis when you can probably make the same amount on airbnb. Hotels were the only game in town for short term rentals less than 30 days. Now there's a flood of competition through airbnb so that could threaten the hotel unions jobs or strike potential.

Also will increase rental prices or housing cost. If you can rent the place short term to cover part of your rent or part of your mortgage, this just allows more business savy folks to bid up houses more.

Feinstein opposed it because it flew in the face of SF zoning laws. SF used to have strict laws about where hotels could be located. AirBnB flouted those laws.
