Land's End Lookout near Ocean Beach also has a nice little gift shop that sells souvineers like books about the history of the Cliff house, Sutro baths, Playland and documentary DVD's , shirts and more.

also the visitor's center near the Golden Gate Bridge has lots of gifts and stuff related to the GG bridge, also toys

For non-cheap but made-in-SF (or at least designed-in-SF) souvenirs, consider visiting Local Take on 17th St. in the Castro. They have a nice selection of art, wearables, and other stuff, all locally sourced.

Yes, better than suffering the tykes an encounter with Bad Elmo out there in the tourist areas. Definitely not worth the trinkets at the Wharf or Embarcadero
