Why not, someone is griping about prices on here all the time, what is the difference about bitching about the cost of gas or housing and the cost of eggs?

I will say, thank God I don't have to buy eggs in Oakland. I think we are paying about $2 a dozen for basic eggs. We pay $2.50 for fresh free range extra large eggs from one of our local eggs farms.

An additional $1 or $2 a dozen to farm humanely would break you, huh? Tight budget. No wonder it rises to the level of appreciative prayer for you.

Living near Lake Merritt in Oakland we have been raising hens now for 4 years. Friends and neighbors support our venture, by often stopping to visit and purchasing a dozen. We have met some nice people this way and hope to continue this venture. The hens now easily pay for themselves at $5 for a multi color dozen of super fresh eggs. If you have not tried a fresh egg once, you most likely will no longer be satisfied with a commercial one.

Thus the out of state suppliers will have to charge just as much as local.
And California will ENFORCE this how? Good luck keeping all the out of state producers honest.

No harder to enforce than a bazillion other regulations on foods and commerce. All manner of products require various compliances. And, among other pathways, being turned in by competitors, both from inside and outside California, is a VERY significant reality.

So great to hear your hens can afford, and are paying, for their room and board in the exorbitant Bay Area! Now those are some hero chickens! And they're giving you multicolor eggs, to boot? Talk about going above and beyond! But you know what I always say: be good to your chickens, and your chickens will be good to you.

Dear Readership,

Here is my latest report on the state of egg sales and chicken care in New Mexico.

It's true that Trader Joe's has cheaper eggs. Most of their eggs sell for around 2.99/dozen, which passes for reasonably-priced, here. Our local food co-op, I'm pleased to inform you, has a new product in their egg dept. They now carry:

Organic Omega-3 SOY FREE brown large AA 100% Pure, Free Range CA SEFS COMPLIANT Chino Valley Ranchers happy chicken eggs

at $5.50/dozen. I am now, temporarily at least, the proud owner of one dozen such eggs. And you may rest assured that your NM eggs come from inspected and certified happy-chicken-law-compliant chickens. Curiously, Whole Foods does not sell CA SEFS COMPLIANT eggs. They don't buy from Chino Valley Ranchers. Their eggs don't appear to be locally-grown. They don't care about happy chickens. Boycott Whole Foods' inhumane chicken eggs.

Now that you know out-of-state farms do get inspected for the living conditions of their chickens, you may sleep soundly at night.

This has been a Public Service Announcement.
