My husband is considering a job opportunity in Half Moon Bay. What family friendly areas should we investigate to live? He would want a maximum of 30 min commute. We have one 6 year old daughter, so schools are a concern as well. We would have a maximum rental budget of around 3000/month and we would be fine with a nice 2BR apartment. Is this feasible in this area? We would be moving from outside the US, so any other info about living costs (utilities, gas, groceries, etc.) would be appreciated. Thanks!

It would be nice if you can find something in Half Moon Bay, but also look at Pacifica (13 miles away/30 minute drive to Half Moon Bay). You will be able to afford a 2 bedroom in Pacifica. SF bay area apts/housing for rent - craigslist

personally, I find much of the Pacific a little drab and depressing. if you can find anything in or around Half Moon Bay, you will be much happier. I especially like the area around Pillar Point Harbor.

It's funny how people always assume a commute will be involved, and that for some reason they can't live where they work. OP, you'll do fine living in Half Moon Bay. It's a wonderful rural community for kids. There's no reason to commute.

Thank you! I'm not assuming I have to commute, that's why I was asking since I don't really know anything about the areas. It's good to know we could live in that area on our budget.

It would be fine, if she can afford it. Look at the link I attached to my post - craigslist rentals in half moon bay & Pacifica. There were no 2 bedroom apartments in the OP's price range in Half Moon Bay (in fact, I was surprised at the high rent for the apartments listed).

There's hardly anything at all available in HMB at the moment. The winter rental season in some areas tends to die down to nothing, like the winter real estate scene. There's a 3-br. available in HMB for $3400. That's a promising sign for someone who's only looking for a 2-br. They should wait til spring and watch the options open up as summer nears. It's good to know there are plenty of openings well within their budget in Pacifica, as a fall-back.

You'll enjoy living anywhere near HMB. Do your husband a favor and choose the closest place you can afford to his work.
