A few things:

1. We know some teachers. They are usually part of dual income households. One set of friends of ours are a teacher/biotech worker couple. They make enough money to afford a nice 1 BR in SF (no kids yet).

2. Not being able to afford to buy housing isn't unique to civil servants anymore. Honestly, I know few people under 35 who even think about buying, even those with good professional jobs clearing six figures. Most people rent, even with decent salaries. The only younger couples I know that I can think of who have bought are dual high income (like 2 software engineers, with one of them being a google employee, making 200K+ per year) who either don't have student loans, or got some help from their parents with a downpayment. I'm not talking about billionaire techies, just typical upper middle class yuppies. Usually, that's in the east bay, often in areas with ok to bad schools. Since their kids are so young, most of them figure they will either a) use the public schools, since success in school tends to be most strongly correlated by family income/education levels and the impact of the schools overall test score doesn't always determine how well YOUR kid will do, b) navigate charter/magnet programs, c) figure out how to pay for private (less of a sting after paying for years and years of expensive daycare, especially if their earning potential increases), or d) move. But, New York has been a city of renters with families for decades, so that's just the way it is in higher COL cities.

3. I wonder how much of the prop 13 situation is going to sort itself out as the baby boomers die/move to retirement communities. Certainly, there is going to be a huge bump in property tax income for the state as some people who have been in their houses for 20+ years move out/die, maybe that will help out with some of its budgetary crises.

And 48 billion was spent on education. Guess which of those functions is actually the role of government as outlined in the constitution.

In 2014 $62,000 was spent on each prison inmate in California vs $9,200 for each k-12 student.

California's 2012-2013 budget $1 billion more to prisons than to higher education.

'nuff said

Based on this method all civil services employees are 50-70k on average more than we spend on every student. Time to fire all the state workers.

We could always outsource prisoners to other states at a much lower cost, but that is for a different thread.

I know one teacher who moved to this area from the Sacramento area based on her spouse's job. After less than a year she realized she could make far more money, with better working conditions and more professional respect, by employing her skills at a well-known tech company rather than teaching. So that's one way teachers afford to live here: transition out of teaching.

You are linking the cost per child to the cost per inmate, I just continued the trend and linked it to the cost per state worker.

You really like to play fast and loose with words and numbers, don't you?

By following the logical conclusion of others opinions is now "fast and loose".

People should have the fortitude to apply political concepts across all applicable ranges instead of picking and choosing examples that fit pre conceived notions.
