Those hours are ideal for avoiding traffic. To save money, and to live in a decent town with low crime, I'd move to Concord. It's right next to Walnut Creek, and on the BART line. It' much cheaper than Walnut Creek, but right next door, if you want to go to more upscale restaurants. Concord is basically a blue collar suburb compared to Walnut Creek's white collar suburb. But, safe and a great place to save money. That's what I'd do in your shoes, anyway. I had family in Concord growing up in San Leandro (my dad was an Oakland cop), and my daughter looked at buying in Concord just a few years ago. She ended up choosing Oakland because she couldn't afford Concord. But, even a few years ago, it was nice (in case you're thinking my recollection of the town being nice was too long ago). Not fancy and expensive like WC, but decent. And way cheaper.
