As a single person you don't need a salary of $10K a month to live in SF. There are studios available in the $1,750 to $2,000K . Some may be rather small and/or in or close to a marginal neighborhood. There is competition for the lower priced apts, so having good credit is a must.

SF bay area apartments / housing rentals "studio" - craigslist
^^^ This. SF is expensive, but not that expensive. Saying that you need a minimum salary of 10k a month to live there is asinine.

They do if they want to rent my home and that's what the 10 grand a month refers to

1700 a month for a studio? Good luck with that. If the place is anything decent the competition will be fierce. So you best be earning good money and have good credit

So your best bet is to find one of these (and it looks like you're already doing that on craigslist) and see if you can pass the "roommate test".

.
OP if you are serious, this is likely your best and maybe only viable option in SF.....

Look for a room to rent in Oakland, you can still find a decent one for < $1,000. My son rented a room for less than that in the Temescal, it wasn't bad except he had to share a bathroom and the guy renting the room adjacent to him played trombone at 3 am

You seem to know everything about the Bay Area. Why haven't you packed up all your belongings and signed a lease yet?

You seemed surprised that a lease is required to rent a place.
I wish you good luck.

That would mean that like 80% of the city can't afford to live in the city, which is obviously absurd. (they live here already!).

I'm sure it can be done quite easily, but you need to get a share. There are shares even in Manhattan for under $1,000 a month, so if all you need is a bed and shower, you can find a place.
