I wouldn't want to work there since there aren't many lunch spots.

Thanks!
Yes it's ghetto and dangerous. Has been for a long time

Right by the coliseum is okay for the most part, and if you're on the other side of 880 you should be okay too, it's just that if you go inland (toward the Oakland hills), it's the most dangerous neighborhood in California. I don't find the industrial area around the 880 and the coliseum to seem that bad, I would just have common street sense as anything can happen.
Real area to avoid is Deep East Oakland (between MacArthur Blvd and San Leandro Blvd from 70th Ave to 109th Ave).

Default just how ghetto is East Oakland

I'm happy to say I lasted there in East Oakland public school for 3 years without any bad things happening. Yes, it's dangerous and would only drive to work/school and back. But it was a growing experience - like me living in China now!

For the politically correct - the urban dictionary definition is the more colloquially used definition
Quote:
(n.) an impoverished, neglected, or otherwise disadvantaged residential area of a city, usually troubled by a disproportionately large amount of crime

The OP is unlikely to be grabbing lunch between 9pm and 6am.

I wouldn't want to work there. There aren't many choices for lunch between 9pm and 6am.

I have a big preference for having useful stuff in walking distance of my office. So that location sucks.

It's funny how so many people in this thread are trying to be PC and sugar coat things.
Yes, the area around Oracle Arena is a dump. It just is. There are no redeeming qualities other than that there's a BART station right there to take you out of the area quickly. There aren't even decent places to eat or hang out anywhere near there.

With that said, I wouldn't be worried about working there. There are enough people around the area during the day that I wouldn't be too concerned about crime. I'd never choose to live in the area though. It is a high crime, dumpy part of Oakland, although it's not the worst part of town. Anybody who says differently is living under a rock or just in denial.
