Tips for visitors going to San Francisco and where to find a public restroom since some restaurants or coffee shops, business have no public rest rooms or require a purchase to use the rest rooms.

it gets annoying when you stop to take a coffee break and there are no rest rooms or they are always out of order, if you buy a coffee your definitely going to need to use a restroom shortly after.

since all fast food places like Carls JR , Burger King , McDonalds, etc are not available unless your a customer, but you could buy something cheap off the dollar menu to get permission to use the restroom.

fancy hotels usually have a food court / bar and you can usually go there and find a clean restroom, some might require a special card to allow access, but you can usually get in if somebody else comes out or goes in, and you simply hold the door and get in.

Public library has a restroom

large shopping malls like the Westfield shopping center

Fisherman's warf has numerous public rest rooms with easy access [no purchase required]

Visitor's center

and if you really have to go, you will need to buy something at a restaurant or order take out.

when it gets dark you can go behind some bushes or behind a building out of view.

another tip, some people carry a plastic water bottle in their car and use it to take a **** in an emergency.

Seriously? We'd appreciate your not instructing visitors how and where to relieve themselves in public. There's enough of that going on already, with the homeless. And btw, your suggestions only apply to half the visitors to the city. The female half of that demographic are better at finding facilities open to the public, so they don't need to resort to public urination and defecation.

I rely on hotel lobbies when I'm there. They almost always have public restrooms. Most highrise office buildings do as well (if you're in the financial district for some reason).

here's another tip, Ive seen or heard of this happening many times while out shopping, women getting their purses stolen while trying on clothes in the changing room, they leave their purse unattended for a minute and another customer steals it from the stall

never leave any valuables unattended even in the changing room or while dining, some people also steal it while your in a restaurant by kneeling over pretending to pick up their phone or tie their shoe and snatch your purse hanging on the chair or on the floor next to you, especially in a crowded restaurant, then throw their jacket or coat over it and walk out.

Why can't you just use a restroom at one of the fast food places? They don't stop people from using the restroom. I've probably used the restroom at the Willits McDonald's almost as often as the ones at my house!

San Francisco McDonalds is not the same as Willits McD's

the rest rooms are for customers only in SF, and they will not let you just walk in and use the rest room, they have special tokens to open the doors, so people cant just walk in off the street.

or an employee might have to open it for you and only if your a customer that bought something, some smaller Fast food places dont have a rest room like the Burger King on Geary & 3rd ave.

Not all places in SF require you to have a key or token to use the bathroom, but most do require you to be a customer (though sometimes employees will give you a pass if you aren't one). The reasoning on both accounts is to keep homeless people/crazy people/drug addicts from doing drugs in them/washing themselves in them/crapping on the ceilings.

Some places have employee only bathrooms, but sometimes they'll let you use it if they're cool and you don't look sketchy.

Usually hotels, museums, or malls/department stores are a good bet. Or you could take a chance with one of those public pay-bathrooms in downtown, and hope there aren't needles or **** all over the place. Or you can find a nice alley/doorway/bush.
