Hi There everyone,

We're trying to figure out where to live when we move to the east bay. We like Piedmont, but there isn't much on the market and now we're considering widening our search area. Lafayette looks beautiful with more houses available.

Does anyone drive from Lafayette to Mission Bay (Benioff Children's Hospital) between 6-7 am and back between 4:30 and 6:00 pm? How much time are we talking about each day? BART will also occasionally be an option for us, but we'll need to drive at least half the time.

thanks a ton

I would imagine at least 75-90 minutes each way on average.

I would highly suggest doing a "casual carpool" if you're not planning on using BART (pickup station outside of BART station). It takes half an hour (about same as BART) according to my husband. Otherwise, count on over an hour without use of carpool lanes and even more on the way home.

Agree with sav858's estimates. At rush hour, I'd call this a horrible, soul-sucking drive, since it's really not that long of a distance.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. How long is the
Commute with casual carpool?

It's about a half hour.

Why suffer daily traffic jams on the Bay Bridge? Look at Pacifica, the western part of San Bruno, Millbrae or Burlingame.

Wow, carpooling reduces the commute from 75-90 minutes to 30 minutes? That's incredible

It is also not believable. The carpool just drops you off downtown and you would still need to get a train to go to Mission Bay.

The only benefit I can see with carpool is at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza which is a significant back up/bottleneck in the AM. And I guess getting on the bridge in the PM at that carpool on-ramp. But other than that there are no carpool lanes between SF and Lafayette so you have to sit in the same traffic as everyone else. I would think it would take you 30 minutes to get from just Oakland to Lafayette in the PM, it has for me before. But I've never done casual carpool on that route or know anyone who does so I can't speak from experience.
