I saw a preview for a documentary on HBO that was produced by Vice. The documentary will examine how all the High Tech jobs are making housing astronomical and unaffordable for those who have thrived there for decades. At least that's what I got from the intro.

Anyone else going to watch? Any thoughts on the astronomical costs of San Fran? I am moving to San Diego and was pissed about their real estate costs, but San Fran is on another level.

I'll believe it when all the illegal immigrants move out of the area (unless President Trump causes that to happen first).

When I moved to the area in 1981 I could not afford to live in San Francisco. I could afford to live in Marin as a renter, but not buy. When I'd finally saved enough for a down payment, we bought in Sonoma County.

Moral of the story: Depending on who you are, San Francisco and the surrounding areas have ALWAYS been astronomical. This is not a new trend.

Vice used to be cool like 15 years ago. They need to bring back the 'epically latered' too.

Amen. I was born to a blue collar family in 1956 living in San Leandro, and my dad was an Oakland cop. We couldn't afford to live in San Francisco either, way back then. Both of my folks grew up in Oakland.

San Francisco is on par with Paris. Only rich people can live there in style. That's always been the case, and always will be.

Just watched it. Seriously the most idiotic "documentary" I've ever seen. Completely biased and poorly developed.

Cities change, people change - this is the changing of SF, and I'm perfectly fine with it. I appreciate artists, musicians and the gay community here, but if you can't afford it, leave. The world is changing too, and there are plenty of awesome places that are much more affordable.

We are leaving because we're tired of being treated like the enemy just because we can afford the current rents - we're caring people, but we're not socialists who think we deserve everything we want handed to us. We believe in earning our life and the quality of life we get at a $200k total income doesn't give us what we really want. We're basically in the middle class here, but we don't feel the need to fight for a spot here because it's too filthy and divided at this point. If the tech people really take over - it might actually be a nicer place to visit.

The irony is that, once upon a time, it was the hippies and artists moving in and changing the culture of San Francisco. Before that, it was very much military, bottling and blue-collar manufacturing--all of which getting priced out by the counter-culture and banking industry that moved in.

I see it so often, this idea that just because I showed up, time needs to stop and no more change can happen. People wax nostalgia over the neighborhood/city/county/state that used to be, ignoring the fact that they were also once a wave in a long series of change that happened before they came along, and will keep happening long after they're gone. I think the Amish are the only group of Americans who have managed to stop time in their community, and I don't see many people pining for gas lamps and horse-drawn buggies. But I do suppose they prove that it can be done.
