Hi, I'm looking for some safe and decent places to live around BART stations in Oakland (like West Oakland, Lake Merritt, Fruitvale, Coliseum, etc.). I am most likely a renter. I am particularly interested in West Oakland, but know there are iffy areas around there. Identifying "squares" (to the north, south, east and west with street names) would be most helpful, especially areas of interest and areas to stay away.

Also, if there are other affordable areas in Oakland that are decent (I would not be able to afford anything like Montclair, Piedmont, Glenview, Rockridge and the like), that would be very helpful to know. Thanks!

Consider San Leandro. I really enjoyed my time there. I lived at Trailer Haven in my motor home and was just a couple of miles from BART. They have a really nice downtown area.

Thank you to the posters who recommended San Leandro. I agree that it is nice, although I am specifically interested in Oakland. Thanks again!

They recommended San Leandro because you don't have many choices in Oakland. I had a friend who lived in Fruitvale years ago, and still lives in Oak near the lake, and he loved Fruitvale. He liked his neighbors and was not a victim of crime. Nevertheless, it is not a gentrified neighborhood.

If you don't think Fruitvale is good enough, you may need to look beyond Oakland. Hence, San Leandro, which is just outside of Oakland. You might also try Berkeley if you can afford the areas near BART.

Living near BART is almost like living with a view, or near the ocean. BART is an amenity that drives prices. In San Leandro, which is not on people's radar yet, it's a relative bargain.

Oak Center Historic district in west oakland. Between 10th and 18th, and Mandela and Brush.

Its quite nice, lived there many years and own property there. Close to everything.

The lakeside apartment district between the lake and Chinatown.once you get a few blocks away from the lake and closer to Chinatown it is cheaper.
