Hello All, I am considering a travel nurse assignment at Alta Bates Summit Hospital in Oakland, and want to know about possible temporary living apartments nearby. I am middle age African American nurse, just looking for safe, affordable temporary ( 13 weeks) apartment living near Alta Bates Summit in Oakland CA. Any thoughts or information is gladly appreciated. My budget can be up to $1200.00 monthly for either a studio or 1 bedroom apartment, near Alta Bates Summit in Oakland CA. Thanks

Your budget doesn't afford you much in terms of safety or commute time. You need to up your budget about $400-500 to afford a studio or one bedroom in a nice area that is close to work.

Your budget will afford you a room somewhere nearby. To get to your budget you'll need to move about 20 miles away in an average suburban area.

You either need to trade solo living, price, commute time or safety. Choose 2: what are you willing to compromise.

Hello jade408 and thanks for your reply. Okay, so I can up my budget to $1650.00 per month. What kind of housing is available for this amount? Ideally I am looking for a commute to Alta Bates Summit Oakland of less than 1 hour, and I am working the later shift that starts at 7pm. A studio or small 1 bedroom would be great. Thanks

Honestly, that's still on the very low end of studios/1BRs near Alta Bates. You'll have to either live in West Oakland or East Oakland which aren't the safest neighborhoods if you're unfamiliar with the area. I think at your budget, you're either going to have to get a roommate or live in a relatively unsafe area of Oakland, or be a lot farther out. Rents in Oakland are nuts right now. The average 1 BR is well over 2k at this point...

Check Craigslist for sublet listings; sometimes these cost less than full leases because people need to fill their apartments for a short time. There are definitely studios in that price range in safe neighborhoods nearby (look in Adams Point especially, and in the area between Adams Point and Broadway) but the challenge is getting a landlord to agree to a short-term lease, which is very uncommon here. I'd focus on sublets (although be sure you have a formal sublet agreement that the landlord has approved). I'd also seriously consider the roommate option since you will be here for such a short time; your budget gets you a much nicer place and a neighborhood with more amenities if you do that, and you might enjoy your time here more.

Also definitely ask Summit about this. Both Summit and Kaiser Hospital (which is a couple of blocks away from Summit) host traveling nurses regularly and there are surely people who've found solutions to the housing challenge; they may even have internal housing lists. There are a couple of actual extended stay places in the area, but none very nearby (Emeryville, Alameda) and you're likely to hit problems if your 13 weeks starts soon because many of those places are already booked up for the Super Bowl in February. Good luck!
