Oakland + SF + SJ city populations added up wouldn't even hit 3 million (~<900k SF, ~1 million SJ, ~415k Oak)

There is an msa based on sf and areas connected by bridges Bart etc.

There is A separate msa for San Jose
Most people consider the CSA for the Bay Area to be slightly more reflective of real-world function than the two MSAs (although the CSA does bring in in some far places that probably are a bit disconnected). The Bay Area's multi-nodal nature doesn't fit very into either Census definition - but if you're going to go with one, the CSA works far better.

This debate happens a lot here on City-Data (especially in the General US sections), so there's a ton of information that you can seek out that goes through this.

I get a sick pleasure watching people with ties to the bay area having to struggle with housing costs. They deserve it for being brain dead voters.

Technically I can outlast you on housing costs because I live at home.

I don't know if it's the voters or the influx of H1-Bers who come from India and China with a lot of cash they've been saving up. These are the people who are buying up everything from the East Bay to the South Bay and Silicon Valley.
I wonder what measures have been taken to try and regulate housing prices here. This is so out of control. Has anything shown up on the ballots regarding this?

It does not make sense to bring in Lodi and Watsonville in an effort to make the Bay Area comparable to New York City. " A bit disconnected " is an understatement As Most don't consider Stockton ,Lodi and Watsonville part of the Bay Area.
