San Francisco is blessed by having two of MLB's and NFL's most iconic franchises, the Giants and 49ers. Over the corse of their shared existence (1958 onward), which of the two has had a greater hold over San Francisco and the Bay Area, based on whatever criteria (size of fan base, press coverage, impact, etc).....and why did you make the choice you did?

49ers, before AT&T the Giants had a mediocre fanbase and attendance. And before 2010 they were simply a mediocre franchise in SF overall.

True, but the A's fanbase and franchise is total garbage. For the bay area Giants are probably the most iconic franchise. 49ers fans and team are pretty much as crappy as the A's. They have to brag about glory from 2-3 decades ago. Dubs and Giants are the only teams worth watching in the bay. The bay is really a beta male metro, not really a big sports metro.

The A's have nothing to do with this thread, since you have trouble reading the thread is about the Giants and 49ers. You didn't grow up here and have no clue what these teams and fanbases were like in the past. Like most transplants here your knowledge of the Giants begins post 2000.

Bragging about glory from 2-3 decades ago, oh mean like Dodgers fans?

I'd say 49ers because the name of the poll is "Since 1958 which iconic franchise, who has SF and the Bay Area supported more, the Giants or 49ers?"

Before 2010 the Giants were pretty mediocre at best, while the 49ers won five Super Bowls.

Anyhow, going forward I think the Warriors will become the prominent Bay Area sports franchise as they keep winning (drawing all sorts of casual fans) and as they move into their new arena. I look at my cousins' and friends' elementary school aged children and they're virtually all Warriors fans. Most of them could not care less about baseball. I think this is pretty common.

If you go to a Warriors game you can't help but notice how young and diverse the crowd is compared to a Giants (or A's, or any other Bay Area team) game. The Warriors have a huge Asian-American fan base and that's the youngest and fastest growing demographic (with the highest income) in the Bay Area.

Only one of these teams had one foot out the door and nearly left the region.

So iconic....

Thing is, people still show up to dodgers games. A's and 9er fans are fairweather.

There really no debate to be had. The Giants are the most iconic team in the bay with the dubs not far behind.

No one else cares about the other teams, because those teams are losers.

Yea and yet the 49ers left the SF metro for Silicon Valley. Nothing says support like showing an NFL team out the front door, hahahahaha!
