Anyone who's paying 3k for a single bedroom apartment (I don't care if it's on Mars) is getting gypped.

What's the difference between a room in a shared house and just living with roommates in an apartment?

N B, If you have been offered at job at a hospital paying $77K, then obviously you have a education & skills. The question you might want to be asking yourself is, after the hard work and time spent on your education & skills, do you really want to end up living somewhere where you have to live with roommates and maybe only have a relatively small room to yourself? There are other places you could live and afford your own apt, maybe even rent a modest size house on a $77K salary or even at a less salary.

But San Francisco has great weather lol and I want to be able to brag to my friends while one lives in North Dakota, one lives in Atlanta, and the other lives in Tennessee.

Actually the weather in SF can vary quite a bit from neighborhood to neighborhood. What is your definition of "great weather" Are you thinking about spending time on the beach in SF on days off work? (called Ocean Beach) Beach in SF is rather nice to take a long stroll on, perhaps sun bathe a bit....Providing the sun is out ! Overcast weather, cool breeze, in the 50s is the case much more often then not during the summer months. Western neighborhoods in SF have a similiar weather pattern.

People on moderate salaries in SF are either living with roommates or they have been a long term tenant of a rent controlled apt and hence the amount the apt building owner has been able to raise the rent on the tenant over the years has been regulated by the SF Rent Control Board. Resulting in a long term tenant having a rent well under current market rate. I know someone with a fair sized apartment in the upper Market St area (desirable neighborhood), I think he is paying approx $1K rent....he has lived in the same apartment close to 30 years

Nothing. They are both something people on welfare do

OP, your budget will work. Your bigger challenge is finding a place that will accept your pets. Rentals in the Bay Area tend to be very pet unfriendly.

Your friend living in North Dakota might be impressed, but I doubt your friends in Atlanta or Tennessee would.

Most people in the southeast would have the biggest psychological hurdle to get over in the comparison between housing alone. Plus, they'd probably not be so happy with the nearly year-round chilliness and fog in San Francisco unless that weather was particularly suited to them.

How a person reacts to San Francisco depends on not only the individual, but also where they're coming from.
