The fact Is people get in bidding wars to pay $2-3 million to live in Oakland. At that price point you can live almost anywhere. This tells me there must be some great qualities about living in Oakland you are ignorant of.
Please tell me...

How many times per week do you eat at a 3 star Michelin restaurant?
How many times per week do you rent a world class sail boat?
How many times per week do you attend a world class symphony?

Your annual income would need to be at least $1 million to afford to do these things on a regular basis, which in that case, you'd be stupid to live in Oakland unless you were forced to live there because your business was there. I personally prefer finding yummy hole in the wall restaurants and simply walking around cool parts of a city.

Not to mention Atlanta is a large city with plenty of art, culture, restaurants, districts etc. I'm a sucker for gorgeous big trees mixed with modern glass high-rises. The only city that has more of this that I've seen is Vancouver. However, in Atlanta you can buy one of these beautiful glass condos in the heart of midtown starting in the $200's.

Having geologic knowledge and being prepared is not being fearful, it is being intelligent.

I would love to move to Florida. I would save so much in state income tax it would be like I was getting paid to live there. Also hurricanes one can see coming in advance. Too bad I don't like hot weather.

Of course I don't go every week.Since there is a symphony season you couldn't go every week but I probably do these things a lot more than someone living in Atlanta. It makes my wife happy to surprise her with ticket and if she is happy I am happy.

I own a yacht which I keep in the Oakland estuary so renting is not an issue.

I have actually been able to go skiing in Tahoe and the day after I come back take my boat out for a leisurely sail in the estuary. Lots of good reasons to live in Oakland.

Here is another cool thing about Oakland. a colleague of mine boards a horse at a stable in the Oakland hills.she can ride her horse in the morning and then go grab a bite to eat in San Francisco.

You ask why someone would live in Oakland and then get butt hurt when you get some answers.

.
BMW say "Oakland is a crime ridden crap hole where even the good pockets still is plagued by crime and homeless."

He says this about where I live and I am the snob?

In response I just pointed out how much people will pay to live in Oakland and the nice things about living in Oakland.
If people get butt hurt? Tough.

You have to also consider that this guy moves to Florida, I believe, yet he is on this local forum bashing Oakland. Makes one wonder if there may be some regret in leaving??? One would think that that when one moves from an area physically, one would also leave mentally. Clearly, this guy cannot leave mentally. I don't know about you but if I don't like something then I don't talk about it much less drone on and on in a forum such as this one. Cheers!

I've never liked Oakland, go back in this forum's history, I used to get into SF vs Oakland debates back when DocGoldstein was around. I think San Francisco is still a great city and I talk on multiple forums. However, I like visiting rather than living.

Oakland is an absolute **** hole in comparison and 10x the price. Even if the cost of living were exactly the same, even if Oakland was cheaper, I would choose Atlanta in a heart beat. Visit before you decide! Atlanta is so much nicer and on top of that it's a fraction of the cost.
There are many nice areas of Oakland (several of my medical professionals live there, as do some family members—all in the hills) and Oakland has a great climate.

I wasn't talking about BMW, I was talking about you. And yes based on your other responses in this thread my impression of you is that you are a snob who enjoys flaunting his lifestyle. I'm surprised you didn't post up a picture of your yacht.
For you Oakland works out great, but a lot of people simply don't fit in your category. You listed a few things that admittedly you really don't do that often yet you make it sound like it's worlds better than Atlanta. Make a longer list that applies to more people and I'll start listening.
Sounds like you are the one getting butt hurt because we all aren't oohing and aahing over your luxurious life. I don't begrudge anyone who has a great lifestyle or money, but when they start flaunting it, it makes me wonder why they can't just be happy with it without having to make sure the rest of the world knows about it.

OK, that's fine, you don't like Oakland. I just don't understand why you would spend your time bashing it when you live in Florida??? I have my issues with suburbia and do not like the lifestyle but I would never post on a online suburban thread and tell people that live in the suburbs that they live a nightmarish lifestyle. What's the point? We all have our preferences. You have yours and I have mine. I can only surmise that your new lifestyle is boring and you are only coming here to bash your former life in order to justify a move that you may think was a mistake. Try to enjoy your new life and forget your old life. Cheers.
