Scharffen Berger, Guittard, Ghirardelli, and See's (I'm sure I'm missing a bunch more) all make their home in San Francisco.

How could you forget Ghirardelli? ( Not that I think it's a quality product, but it's an SF icon.) I like Scharffen Berger, I haven't tried Guittard. Your topic is too distracting for me to be able to answer your question, lol.

Scharfen Berger was bought out by Hershey's several years ago. So it is no longer a California business. But you are right, it did start in Berkeley. See's was founded in Los Angeles in 1921, but now is headquartered in South San Francisco.

Hershey's and Godiva are in PA. Does that make PA a chocolate hotspot?

Let's all take a field trip to Switzerland to do some research on the Mother Lode of chocolate hotspots.

Another one got left off. Shaws opened in the 1930s in SF. When we lived in San Bruno in the 50s, we had a big walnut tree and used to sell walnuts to them for their chocolates. Back then it was called Douglas Shaws and their plant was in Millbrae. They had a bunch of stores, though I don't know if they are still around.

Preston's in Burlingame, too. Although perhaps they're too small to make this list, and they make all kinds of candies in addition to just chocolate.
