Craigslist is great, for sure, but is there any place to find rental listings BESIDES Craigslist that I should know of?

Try the San Francisco Chronicle classified ads at San Francisco Bay Area — News, Sports, Business, Entertainment, Classifieds: SFGate.

Check with www.resortquest.com.

I would also do a general search with google,

San Francisco Vacation rental

as your search words.

I have also seen vacation rentals on Ebay

SFRent isn't bad - sfrent.net : Welcome to sfrent.net! (http://sfrent.net/page.php?Page=home - broken link)

You can also try rent.com & apartments.com, though they usually only list the big/expensive complexes -
Apartments for Rent and Homes for Rent
Apartments.com - Free Nationwide Apartment Search with the Most Visual Rental Listings Online.

Aside from that, craigslist and SFGate really are your best bets around here!

Try Bay Area Classifieds. They are a local site with higher quality listings than the nationals.

Personally I like rentalhomes.com or rentals.com to find homes. You get to check out pics of the inside and outside of the places (if they post them). That way you do not waste time trekking around looking at places you do not like.

Padmapper.com pulls from CL and others but provides a map - which I love.
Also, trulia and zillow are now doing rentals.

Lastly, don't send money to someone who says they have a great deal but you have to western union the dough to them. It's a scam.

I see it as a sign of the times and the disruptive power of Craigslist and other websites. CL is one big reason newspapers are having such a rough time as it zapped away a $20 billion a year business. That's significant. People simply aren't paying for classified ads anymore when they can post on CL for free. That's a lot of money lost for newspapers and CL is the first choice of many people now.

There are other resources, but CL these days seems to be the primary one for searching out rentals. I say this because I searched CL for places when I was planning my move back here from NYC over the summer and when it was time to move to a permanent place. I found other sites, but CL has the most listings for what I was seeking: an apartment or house share situation.

Padmapper is great because of the map feature and it pulls up other ads nearby. I love that it integrates the Walk Score site too. I don't own a car, so I seek out places where it's easy to walk and has good mass transit. I also like how it let's you know whether the rent is on par for the area, a bit too high, or a bit too low (score)! (I'm going to hate it when the majority of landlords realize this site exists.) However, as a testament to the value of CL, it's pulling in their data.
