I feel that way about North Beach and Nob Hill. Once I step foot into those neighborhoods, something "clicked." You and I are in a similar boat: I'm moving to SF for school too. Best of luck to you!

I see why you weren't impressed by Haight-Ashbury/Upper Haight. Its way past its prime and, based on what I saw, was awfully commercialized. Not to mention, its overrun by tourists and has alot of questionable, nostalgic hippie holdouts.

The Lower Haight, by contrast, was much more authentic and down-to-earth. (grittier, too)

It was! I was really let down by the whole feel of it. I asked my cabby later that day what he thought of it, and his reply was "It's over, isn't it??" I feel like it's trying too hard to be what it once was (that's strictly an outsider's POV, not meant to offend).

It's a shame I slipped by Lower Haight. Next trip I'll make an effort to see it.

It seems to be hard to get blue sky when you take picture San Francisco.
But nice shots.
Thanks for sharing

San Francisco is such a nice place... I've been there three weeks ago (I'm from Germany, so it was a long way to go )
Thanks for all the pics here
I've also made some photos in my travel report, maybe you want to have a look... http://www.aerogate.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1630
Sorry for using the "wrong" language, but the pictures say enough, I think.

Default AIDS LifeCycle

My roommate left for the AIDS LifeCycle this morning, where over 2000 people ride their bikes from SF-LA (~500 miles) to raise money for AIDS research. "Send-off" was at the ungodly hour of 6am at Cow Palace, and I went to support him... just stayed up all night, instead of getting up at 4am like he did. Anyway, here are some of the better pictures I got from the event:

Loading up the vans, which follow the riders with their stuff...

Fabulous!

My (other) roommate with 2 of the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence"

And they're off...

Love the feather mohawks

There's my roommate! (the dark-skinned guy all dressed in blue)

What crappy - yet typical - weather. And check out the house on stilts at the far left.
