The only other place that will give me that at this point is Denver, and to be honest it's getting expensive there as well plus I'd still have to deal with the snow and ice that I deal with now.

SF and the Bay Area seems like a good choice for what I want, if it doesn't work I can just bid to go somewhere else. For me it's worth a shot
Sounds like a good deal! Hope it works out for you!

You'll definitely have more choice going farther out. I'm thinking it would be preferable to snag a place closer in, for a shorter commute, among other reasons, but it's up to you and your priorities.

I don't know where all the people who said you need to look far get their information from, but dude, $1,500 to $2,000 will get you a 1 bedroom in the nicer part of Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley. Ok, more like $1,800 to $2,000 but you the idea. Unless, you want to live far away to save as much money as possible, but I don't think that's what you want.

If I were you, I'd look in places around the below area: near Lake Meritt, north of 580, in Alameda, close to Berkeley's BART, or Emeryville near the shopping district or next to the bay . But know that there are more options for you outside of these:

Charming First Floor 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath

1 Bedroom 8 blocks to Casual Car Pool

589 Merritt, Remodeled, Hardwood, Gas Stove, China Hill

Sunny upper Victorian 1 BR

1 Bed/ 1 Bath New Remodeled Unit

After a 7-9hr drive, I'd want as short as a commute I could get. I talked to a couple of drivers today, they are in either Vallejo or Fairfield and they say the commute can be challenging at times. Plus I'd rather be close to be able to use BART to explore the area more on my days off. What I save by living on the outskirts I'll probably spend on driving in and parking everywhere.

We all have to right to complain about rent lol. I'm just looking at it as trading one high cost area for another. At least I won't have pay $300 for the privilege of parking my car 3 blocks away from home in a garage.

my sister just moved here from NYC. she's living on the edge of uptown (right across the street from whole foods and about 1/2 mile from the downtown greyhound station). it's a 1BR backyard bungalow for $1600 a month. so 2K budget is feasible.

There's no need for a long commute, or to be way out in Vallejo (an impossible commute to Oakland, btw. Not doable.) And no, you DON'T want to commute to work in a personal vehicle. (You have been warned! ) Stick with transit; there's not only BART, there are also buses.

Vallejo to Oakland is around an hour on transit, not that "impossible".

Not that great either, two hours of commuting on bart with bums and weirdos knuckle dragging off of drugs at any time of the day.

Nobody said it was great. Vast majority of riders on BART are professionals and regular working class people, especially during commute hours.
