That incident took place in the area I mentioned in my first post; there's a certain area south of campus generally around People's Park that's higher-crime, which is why I suggested your friend look for housing north of campus, or off the southeast side of campus. Either that, or he could live in a dorm bordering campus.

DC dan,

I lived two blocks away from campus (south side, one block up from Shattuck two blocks from Bancroft).
I had to clean up Human waste in my back yard as the homeless used my yard to defecate. One day upstairs I looked out my window and saw a homeless guy pull down his pants to **** in my neighbor's yard. I opened the window and shouted "Can you please not **** in my neighbors yard!!!" On a Sunday my wife and infant child were down stairs and again two homeless pulled out their privates and were urinating on my brand new white picket fence. Again, I had to confront these two. This led to garbage being thrown all over my yard and two slashed tires on my car.

Seriously, My uncle was murdered their October 1997 after dinner around 8:00-9:00 pm with a friend walking her dog. In the exact same area near campus.

If you can not afford to live in the hills at least do your best to live on the north side of campus. That way you have a chance at a normal life.

I am sorry to hear that. Now I know that south side must be avoided. My friend will move with his girlfriend in case Berkeley is his ultimate choice.

What do you mean in the hills? Is it a neighborhood?

Yes: off the SE side of campus (generally College Ave. & east of there) and the NE side, as well. The campus itself extends into the hills. It's the higher-end part of town, though north Berkeley in general is fine too.

Safe enough during the day, but Berkeley gets totally sketch once the town rolls up to to sleep around 10.

Aftet 10 it is drunks, bums, freaks, and thugs from Richmond and Oakland who took BART into town.

Not safe, especially for a single woman after 10pm.
