I've heard this written about NYC and am interested how San Francisco compares.

No. They closes early. Not much to eat after 10. Not many people out after midnight.

I agree with this. Very few cities are. But apparently, Scott wiener is trying to change the laws in San Francisco to allow bars to stay open until 4 a.m., and that may have a big impact.

SF has some late night places to eat at (diner-ish places), but overall things shut down by 10, or so (bars "by 2"...which usually means 1:30).

It's like most cities in this regard (even NYC isn't 24 hours in most ways if you want to look at it as a whole).

And of course there is BART. The subway closes at midnight. That IMO puts a real crimp in the ability to have a lively and vibrant late night city.

No it is not, even Orlando, FL has a lot more going on after 10 PM than San Francisco. San Francisco has a ton of restaurants and stores, but most of them close at or before 10 PM, even the main shopping center in Union Square closes at 8:30 PM.

There are late night buses, but they're a bit of a hassle due to scheduling. And not to be too nitpicky, but MUNI is more the role of the "subway" in SF...BART is regional rail.

Yes, it is just way easier to be out late in many places. In SC we had the Waffle House - and those were everywhere! And the even tourist shops were even open late - except on Sunday!

SF has one of the oldest median ages for a large city, and fewest numbers of kids.

It's a pretty sleepy, boring, amd tame crowd.

As much as the Bay Area has a "radical" reputation, the actual cultural mentality here is quite Puritanical.

Even the young are that way.

7AM hot yoga is preferred to late night clubbing sessions.

This is the land of the Health Nazis and Noise Nazis.

Lots of people here are actually quite uptight.
