Going to visit sanfran and Oakland area on vacation for first time since 1971. At that time I arrived home from Vietnam. Without going into detail,my welcome there was much less than friendly. Is it safe to wear my Vietnam veteran cap.........has the atmosphere toward the military gotten any better?

Jeff, IMHO I would say you'll be fine.

My husband came back from Viet Nam a few years before you did. We didn't know each other at the time...but he's told me stories of what his reception was.

He has a sticker on the back of his car and wears his cap often. He is frequently thanked for his service and suddenly remembers he's wearing his cap.

We had been shopping once and came out of the store to find a note on the windshield. We were both concerned someone had hit the car but thoughtfully left a note. It was actually a kind note thanking my husband for his service. He carries that note in his wallet to this day.

Welcome back to the Bay area!

Thank you very much. I was hoping I would not have to deal with that again..........

The hipsters may refer to you as "sir" ... in the "Dad" or even "Grampa" sense.

Not to challenge your experience, but I am once again baffled by this recurring scenario people paint. I did two combat tours, leaving from San Diego and returning to Alameda. First in '66 -'67. I shared an apartment in Haight-Ashbury when I returned. 'Summers of Love', they were called. Height of the hippie invasion. I never had a lick of trouble from anyone anywhere anytime. Just the opposite. I was welcomed with open arms even in uniform. Offered free-love and plenty of weed. Indulged considerably in both. Lived in the Bay area mostly since, until returning to San Diego and Central Coast just a few years ago. Did 7 years active and another 15 reserves to retirement with all benefits conferred.

Never once, ever, anywhere had a lick of negativity. Don't wear caps or buttons or jackets. But I do have a small rear window sticker identifying as war vet. It's there to reduce tailgating and road rage and ticketing from whomever might recognize and give me a little nod instead.

It's 2017, most hipsters will think "Vietnam Vet" is some indie band you're supporting.

You'll be fine.

The Vietnam Veterans is a French psychedelic band. They released six full-length albums during the 1980s.

The people who protested Vietnam are all mostly conservative Trump mooks.

The ex hippies are all dead, senile, or out of state.
