Hi,

I have a job offer in Mountain View, so I'm getting ready to sell my Santa Fe, NM home and move out there with my wife, soon-to-be-born baby boy and pets.

I'd appreciate it if someone could reply and tell me areas that I should be looking to rent a house. The area has to be safe (you can walk alone after dark) and within an hour and half's drive of Mountain View. I would be looking for at least 2 bedroom; sq footage > 900. We have 2 indoor cats and 2 outdoor dogs - I know that'll make finding a place even tougher - so we'd need a back yard (doesn't need to be huge).

Just looking for some names of towns/recommendations so I can do some research myself!

Many thanks!

Lee

PS: By affordable, I mean preferably less that $2k a month. We're both working right now paying a $2.3k mortgage. The wife won't be working out there. Ideally, I'd like to pay ~$1500 per month, but I realize that may severely limit our options.

You could probably rent a duplex unit with a yard in San Jose if you're prepared to spend that much. I don't see it being a major problem.

You may wanna look into Daly City, San Mateo, and San Bruno areas. I'm not too familiar with those areas, but I know It's not too long of a drive to get to Mountain View, the rents aren't as high as The City, and those cities aren't dangerous.

Try Sunnyvale, Santa Clara or Fremont. All are very close to Mtn View. We paid around $2200 for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath with backyard in Sunnyvale, and we have a pet. Check out Craigslist. Try to commute as little as you can - 1.5 hours would be brutal!

You could probably even find something in Mountain View for that price. Check out Craigslist for rental listings. Just don't be tempted by East Palo Alto, lower rent, but not safe! Also, keep in mind it's common to get a rent increase every year, so make sure it's comfortably within your budget. Good luck!

I agree, No EPA!!! We rented a 2 bedroom townhouse with a yard in Cupertino for $1350 a month. We were getting a deal though because the identical unit in the townhouse next to us was renting for $1900. Try Sunnyvale, Mountain View, west San Jose, Santa Clara, North San Jose. You should find something.

Which is the apartment complex? Any tips to find/get good deals?
