Question confused by SF bridges/costs

Maybe some of you who travel over the bridges can help me- on our scouting trip to SF we incurred a bill in the mail for a 'toll violation' on our return home; but we always had our children with us -we were of the understanding that you pay going ONE direction then IF you have multiple passengers, you don't pay going back the other direction - is that only on one of the bridges? Thanks! (Also WHO is allowed to use the "FASTtrack" lane?)

There are only certain hours designated for carpool. Usually 5-9 AM, and 4-6 PM, but that might vary slightly depending on which bridge you were on.

Fas Trak is an electronic system where you prepay your bridge tolls and you have a little device in your car that tracks your usage. Only cars with a Fas Trak transponder can use those lanes.

You should have been in the lane that takes cash ($4). Fastrack is a transponder mounted on the windshield and it keeps track of the number of times you cross a bridge. They then send you a bill for the tolls.

Actually, you *don't* pay only if you are heading into the city *and* you have multiple passengers *during* carpool hours (as mentioned about). Otherwise, if you will need to pay if you are heading toward SF on the Golden Gate Bridge or the Oakland Bay Bridge, or if you are heading toward the Peninsula on the San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridge.

They'll waive your ticket if you sign up for Fastrak. The details should be on there.

I have FasTrak and it saves me time AND money, since you only pay $4 instead of $5 on the Golden Gate... of course, I use the Bay Bridge and Carquinez every day, so that doesn't really help. Anyway, like Sonarrat said, they'll probably forgive the ticket, even if you don't sign up for FasTrak (just explain the situation and play stupid, LOL). They waived one for me once, when I crossed through the FasTrak lane, not realizing they hadn't replenished my account in a month! The next bill I got had a $20 credit, so I didn't even have to complain to get it removed.
