I have always respected capitalism. That's what made our country great.
I also believe that the current state of the real estate market is conducting in an immoral but perfectly legal way due
to poor laws in place. There is no regulation standard in place and as home prices keep turning over and for a higher
and higher profit the real estate merry go round will spin faster and faster until it spins out of control and eventually self destructs.
are real estate laws immoral in east texas and arkansas ?
or just places like NYC or SF?

You can find a ton of people who say capitalism here in America is immoral.
How is that poster they can respect capitalism yet feel real estate should be regulated and real estate laws are immoral?
I just don't understand the thought process behind some of these posts.

But what I find sad: few today even bother to speak out against the system which allows this. Many of the people who are getting gouged instead seem to shift blame onto the taxman. Or on themselves or their neighbor for not working hard enough to be rich.

Modern America is so against the unearned wealth of the landlord that it decided to elect a landlord President!

Do some research...

Even with these rental rates, SF still has one of the lowest cap rates (returns) given the price of real estate.

So many tenants are clueless when it comes to rentals, they think OMG THEY MAKE SOOOOOO MUCH MONEY!!!

This is an article about a 21 y/o software engineer in Berkeley living on $250,000. This is who you are competing against for housing. How do you stack up now? In 5 years? 10,000+ more people like this are coming to SF alone in the next few years. That's reality.

Are you going to be priced out to Sacramento? Or are you going to suck it up and do something so you can continue to live here?
Oh boy, poor me, I wish I had that life at 21. She didn't work past 5 pm yet makes $260k. I need to be transported back 30 years and enjoy this new lifestyle these kids have.

Yep, looks like every direction he turns he's getting slapped...ROTFLMAO!

At some point, every one gets tired of the whiners. Can someone please inform Fluffy the Wondercat that his whining isn't going to magically get him a house.

Is the market moral? Or, is it just is? It has no emotional although it is emotional for the people involved. Maybe some people are immoral but not the market itself. It just is.

I hope the OP understands that any land use tax or other type of fee simply gets passed on to the tenant in the form of increased rent. So instead of "punishing" the landlord, it actually hurts the renter.

Also, Winston Churchill, with his family trust, chauffeur, and manservant, is the last person who should be criticizing how anybody makes a living.

Didn't the great economist and philopsher Adam Smith make some similar points to Churchill in 'The Wealth of Nations'.

Just as Karl Marx is seen as the father of Communism, Adam Smith was seen as the father of Capitalism and modern economics.

Any similar points made by Adam Smith are done so in the light of broad macroeconomics and looking statistically at how to make the most efficient use of a society's resources.

Churchill was probably just trying to squeeze some land owner into a better deal for his new manor house.

The OP only wants to see rents drop dramatically in SF and, erroneously, believes that implementing additional taxes and fees on property owners will somehow lead to SF housing prices dropping to the point he can afford to buy (probably about 1/4 of the current price). OP is not addressing the actual reason for housing prices - unrelenting demand due to the bay area being the epicenter of the information revolution.

Should we look at adjusting housing policies to ease up zoning restrictions and hold cities accountable for their housing/jobs imbalance? Absolutely. These are long term solutions that will probably take a decade to come to fruition. The only immediate relief would be to incentivize companies through tax breaks to allow x% of their workforce to work remotely. This would allow huge amounts of people to move to lower cost areas yet still take part in the dynamic bay area economy.
