Because very few people there care about driving pleasure...

Google "Prius" and "Haters" or something like that. There are legions of people who truly DETEST other people who drive Priuses. I learned about it in a group that was monitoring a certain highway and it is brutal.

The Bay Area also has a lot of people who are early adapters of technology, which may also be an influence on the many hybrid or electric vehicles. It's no accident that Tesla is headquartered here. Waymo (the self driving vehicle company) is based here as well.

The relatively higher prices we pay for fuel makes the payback period for electric or hybrid vehicles a more viable option as well, from an economic standpoint.

I currently own and drive a Prius and I really like the vehicle. I've driven a lot of cars and have no issues with its performance. It's actually pretty quick from 0-30 and have no problems passing at 70+mph. With its hatch design I've fit huge items in the back giving it more versatility than a sedan and doesn't guzzle gas like a SUV. After being a Prius owner for a few years I have no desire for another car. The oddest part of being a Prius driver is the weird comments about the car I get from non-Prius drivers.

Thank you for proving my point. Performance is more than just 0-30 and passing.

I drove a Prius and rode in one from L.A. to Mammoth. The rubber band CVT was annoying. It was noisy going up hills because the engine was struggling. There is no road feel in the steering.

It is an appliance to get from point A to point B. Nothing more. Granted, that's all many people want...

Oh, Hyundai and Kia have come a long way in terms of quality improvements, they've closed up the gap a lot between them and, say, Toyota.

I hear ya - hybrids are serviceable and practical as transportation, but kind of soulless. I miss the sounds of the engine when it's moving. You hear the old joke about NASCAR races with the sounds of electrics/hybrids... (move your hand in silence)

The Prius is also disproportionately popular with the Asian demographic (as are Teslas). The #1 selling car in Japan is the Toyota Prius, other than the little 660cc kei cars that get giant tax breaks while polluting the environment with their outdated crud motors.

The Prius has also proven itself as being a very reliable car that can go hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than regular maintenance. There is a reason they are used so much in fleets and as taxis. Sure, the hybrid battery is expensive to replace if you are going to do it new at the dealer. But there is no reason for that now. There are many shops that service the batteries and many more online that sell either individual cells or matched cells to be user replaceable with no more than common tools. Sure the interior leaves a lot to be desired, but for someone wanting a reliable economical vehicle, the Prius is a good fit.

I am in the market for a used hybrid and was considering a Prius, but will probably be going with a Ford Fusion instead, they just offer so much more for not a lot more money. Now, they haven't been in service as long as the Prius, and really haven't had the same chance to prove themselves for reliability, and yes, it is a Ford after all, but they really have gotten to be a lot more reliable in the recent past.
