The Nurses I work with are far from being able to sustain a modest living here... They take wonderful vacations 2 times a year and all, but the youngest own their home...

I've posted before about a young couple... she's an RN and he's an Oakland Police Officer... 26 years old with a combined income of 200k
I am reffering to the San Jose Area and it's not a lot when you have a family to support all alone and lots of other debut. The nurses I know who just started make only about 40,000 so I'm sure it depends on lots of factors but if you make collectively below 100 thousand it's gonna be rough to have a house and family.

It does cost more to live in South Bay than most of the East Bay...

No matter where you live... raising a family alone is bound to be a struggle and I can only imagine it's harder in the South Bay...

The floor Nurse I know with the highest income works and lives in San Jose and brings home almost 200k with all the nights and weekends she works and no family to take care of...

I've been in medical a long time in the Bay Area and 40k per year for a RN is unheard of... really... that's only $20 and hour... She can easily double that by working for the registry...

Are you sure she is an RN?

She could be a LVN... but 40K is also too low...

40k is generally what a CNA... Certified Nursing Assistant earns...

Ultrarunner my friend who is an RN currently works in LA and yes he is a full cert RN and takes home after taxes about 40k, so I'm not sure if there is a huge difference from LA to the bay area. He went to a private college and has a degree, not just the regular cert but the higher degree which would allow you to be a head nurse I think. He doesn't work extra shifts though so maybe that makes a difference. And it's his first year. Either way as a teacher or any person making below 100,000 you will really struggle out here.

You have a good point... the Bay Area does pay at the top end of the scale for RN's... even higher than Hawaii.

The 100k starting is for SF General and La Honda... wages do drop the farther east you go. The 100k is not take home... so that would be less.

A lot of RN's graduating today go the 4 year route and leave school with a BSRN... it makes it easier to get a master later. We also have Nurses that are Diploma RN's as well as AS degrees... I don't think there are any Diploma programs left...

Maybe some Socal RN's will chime in...

Being that there is a Nursing shortage not just in the Bay but all over the state. I find it hard to believe thats all they take home after taxes. You sure your friend is an RN not an LVN? All RN's I know make 90-150k per year with huge bonuses and paid vacations.

Thumbs up Can't say enough bad things about the bay

Top 5 reasons why the bay really does suck (oakland, berkeley, and SF).

5. The cost of basic living is beyond the beyond, but this is obvious.

4. The homeless are professionals. I get hit up for money and cigarettes 10 times a day on average. no joke. These people have been selling their stories for years and years. I think it comes from all those hippies who embraced vagrancy decades ago. There seems to be this long standing attitude of entitlement. I don't even think most of the bums are actually homeless. This one I see everyday has a cell phone.

3. BART is pathetic. It's a train that services 3 major cities and yet shuts down at midnight each night. 20 minute waits between trains. Always smells like ****. Can't take your bike on during "peak" hours which means you really can't bike to work in this so called bike-friendly city.

2. Crime is horrendous and the police are worthless. My car was broken into five times last year and just this month was stolen and stripped for parts. This was in a "good" section of town. Police did absolutely nothing.
This kind of thing is just expected out here.

1. Oakland was rated 4th most violent city in the US last year. SF and Berk aren't much better. I know of three people who have been mugged recently in very public places. I hear about kids getting shot each weekend. it's embarrassing.

Only reason to live out here is the food. even that's not worth it.
move to a real city.

OK here comes the Oakland bashing again. Yipee. OK you folks from zip codes with 4 towns, please note that Oakland has 13 zip codes. Before you go and make generalizations, I'd recommend you take a look at each zip code in Oakland specifically. You might be surprised.
