I have a quick question in regards to the overall safety of an area in Oakland.

I found a sublet along the inner harbor along Embarcadero W. near the Lake Merrit Channel and Estuary park. What is the crime like in this area?

Reasonably safe area. I would not be concerned.

I wouldn't live there. You should go to the oakland police department's program that shows you recent crime activity. All of Oakland is violent; the stats for serious crime are high.

This is why I am leaving.

Is that the condo complex on the waterfront near Jack London Square? The concern there is not really crime, because it's highly visible and populated by a bunch of above-median income folks. It's noise - trains, trucks, barges, etc.

I'm third generation Oakland and NO, all of Oakland is not violent... just look at the Police Stats for proof.

Generally, crime is concentrated in certain areas and almost non existent in others.

Of those of my neighbors that have relocated in the last 20 years... the biggest issue is the public schools vs private schools. I have had 3 great neighbors move do to the schools... one to Moraga, one to Lafayette and one to Orinda solely due to the public schools.

All of Oakland is violent, huh? MMMmmm, okay. The fact that most people I know who live in Oakalnd, including myself and hubby haven't been touched by violent crime We have been hit twice by property crime, but that's not violent. I guess that means nothing at all.

Since you're leaving anyway don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

So the fact that I live deep in East Oakland in the flats for 20 years and nothing big has happened is simply a miracle?

No -- the unfortunate fact is that drugs and gangs cause most of the violence. And they usually do it within their own groups. If you aren't doing drugs and running with gangs, there's a very very good chance that nothing will happen to you. Even in the flats.

Now, to be honest, I can't attest to what the neighborhoods are like in the areas where these types have a stranglehold.... and I hope to never find out.

The hills the only safe place? If you don't live in Oakland please don't comment on what you consider safe. All you do is perpetuate the fear tactics of the media.
