If that's the case, then you can do everything in Miami, Philly, and Boston in about 4 days

I assume you have people working in San Francisco doing the grunt labor, you haven't automated that yet, so how do they afford to live there and pay $2,000 a month's rent? Your city opens their arms for illegal aliens but you don't give a hoot for your fellow countrymen. Then you turn around and pretend to be liberal democrats but as far as I'm concerned you're snobby rich republicans.
This is about cost of living matters in SF right? So why did someone get offended and call posts like this a hijack? BTW, this is a great post, and I totally agree with the sentiments expressed here. The squeezing out of the working middle and lower middle class is a nationwide problem, but much more pronounced in SF. From the days of Jack London to Joe Di Maggio to Eric Hoffer, SF had room for just plain regular people. The latte lovers of today have pushed this out and now they have a pale imitation of a once great city.

Thumbs down BUHbe San Francisco - home of perverts and not much else

I used to live in San Francisco, when living there was good and rent was 65/month for a two-bedroom on Hugo and 4th, out by the Park. (Yes, the 70s.) I was young and foolish and had no particular moral code or understanding of the importance of Integrity and Ethics.

Now it is 2008 and I have wandered far from SF. Since 1979 I've lived all over the world, working offshore projects as a contractor. Yup, for nigh on 30 years I've made 'the big bucks'. I did return to SF in 2000 for 18 months to work for two startups in management roles, but frankly the cost of living had escalated so that the wonderful 2-bedroom apartment I'd rented in the 70s for 65/month went for 3500/month in 2001. Crazy, because the apartment had become very shabby by 2001, due to the fact that it is impossible to remove a tenant from a rental no matter how poorly they take care of their landlord's property. tsk tsk

San Francisco is indeed a young person's town. Why? Because when you are young you tend to be very liberal with no particular standard or ethics. Now, I scorn the San Francisco Bay area. It's for liberals and sexual deviants (you heard me, deviants), or those that God abhores.
As for payscale... as a Director of QA Governance I'd be lucky to make $115-130K in the SF Bay area. Here in Central Florida I make 175K and at the age of 60, too. I could not get that pay in SF, plus I'd have to pay a very high state tax too, because SF is a socialist state that 'enables' rather than 'empowers'... i.e., makes its WORKERS pay for the deadbeats (and illegal aliens) who think the state should support them and pay for their education/healthcare, while SF WORKERS go without.

There is no place for lazy bums or illegal aliens (aka "FELONS") in Florida. I own a 3-bed/2bath 2-car garage house here in Florida. I pay an HOA of 110/month for a list of amenities you could only fantacize about in SF.... 40 miles of golfcart trails. I hardly ever drive my GMC truck anywhere since my golfcart will take me to the shopping centers, the 6 golf courses, the stables where my horses reside, the polo fields, the 14 baseball fields, the 64 swimming pools, the 22 community centers, library, grocery stores, movie theatres, etc. and I only need recharge its batteries about twice a week. Since the HOA includes my electricity, water, garbage, basically my golfcart costs me diddlysquat and I can even drive it to the drive-in golfcart theatre. Oh, yes, and gas costs (today--9/28/08) $3.55-3.70/gal. My truck is paid for and I only need tank up about 1.5 times a month, so it's like owning a 'hybrid' car in SF. Also my vehicle insurance (1000/deductible) is 54/month. I don't need to worry about anyone stealing it here, as there are no illegal aliens or deadbeats in this area, and this 50-mile square community is gated (even though it doesn't need to be).

Oh I do have to drive my truck to work, only about twice a month for meet/greet meetings, since my company has a 'work from home' policy as well as a standard 9-hr/day, 4-day work week (try that in SF!).

It's true, sometimes I miss the trolley cars in SF, but hey, I just go to St Augustine and take the trolley there, before walking on THAT beach hunting for shark's teeth. (P.S. One can swim in the ocean year-round here and there's no where in Florida that is more than 60 miles from the beach... or even closer to a year-round waterpark.) Sometimes I miss taking the ferry to Angel Island, but when that happens I just drive 3 hours and then take the ferry to the Bahams for a long weekend which is waaaay better than a hike around Angel Island (or a 5-hour drive from SF to Long Beach and ferry to Catalina).

So come again? What's the pull to SF? The Golden Gate Bridge? Oh yeah, if you are suicidal! High rents? High state tax that is used to support illegal aliens and street bums? Homosexuals running rampant and keeping the culture narcissistic and focused on perversion? Good dim sum restaurants? Hmmmm. I can go to Chan's in Orlando for GREAT dim sum. etc etc etc.
Good pay? Yeah right ha ha hah. No State employment tax? hmm. Oh sorry, my mistake. That is FLORIDA not SF.

No, you can keep SF. It's not a good place to live after all, unless you like the excitement of unexpected earthquakes. There are hurricanes in Florida, but where I live the most that has ever happened is a week-long rainstorm that does NOT flood the streets because this community planned for lengthy rainstorms to occur. There was a 10-day rainstorm due to a hurricane in late August, the day the rain stopped the streets were dry in less than an hour.

P.P.S. I paid $130,000 for my house less than 8 months ago. No, not 'downpayment'.... TOTAL payment. Try THAT in the Bay area. AND my home value is going UP, not down, as in SF.

So you love Florida for the senior citizens, God, golf carts, 10 day rainstorms, and trucks? Methinks I'll stay in the Bay Area for the rest of my life. Thanks for the heads up though!

Thanks for your insights, Captain Angry.

If you're any indication of the general populace in Florida, it's reassuring to know that I've already crossed it off my list.

Well good lord. It's a good thing you STATED you were a 60-year-old Floridian, because otherwise there's no possible way we would have been able to tell from your antiquated, bitter, angry, pompous, I-have-perfect-credit-and-thus-am-of-more-value-to-society-and-humanity-than-you attitude.

On the other hand, my grandma is older than you and still a very cool chick. It must be the humidity over there.

I've been to Florida...in response to your overblown, run-on hatespeech, I will shorten my critique to a few choice words...BLECH. Huh, look at that? Only needed one.

And for crying out loud, you're not going to find anything ANYWHERE for 65/month anymore. Get over it.
