If you were to start your new family of 2 kids who are only 3 years old, which city would you go to that offer good school, good neighborhood or community, affordable house (500k-600k range) and is still travel distance (like 1 hr )back to San Francisco? Some Asian population is helpful. I was looking into San Ramon, Pleasant on, and Fremont. Where did you purchase your house, how much was it, and what were the reason you make that choice? Thanks for your sharing and experience in advance

Those are all nice towns, and should meet your criteria... you should also consider Walnut Creek, which is similar but a tiny bit more "upscale." And if you don't mind being on the other side of the bay, look into Foster City, Pacifica, certain parts of Daly City, Burlingame, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and maybe Mountain View. Some of these places might be out of your budget, unless you're willing to compromise on size (like a townhouse/condo instead of a HOUSE). It would also be great to live near BART, since that makes for an easy commute into San Francisco. Speaking of which, those last 3 towns I mentioned are pretty far from the city... but you can take CalTrain, which is a nice but slow ride - maybe an hour & 15 minutes each way?

San Ramon, Pleasanton, are very good choices with excellent schools. The problem is your budget is a bit short. If you can get into the $650k you can start looking at entry level 3-2 homes. Parts of fremont have more asians, but the schools are hit and miss there. I think of the 3 I would rate Pleasanton as the most family oriented. There are no bad areas of pleasanton or san ramon really, but fremont can have areas that a bit more run down.

I think you would be happy in Millbrae, in particular in the areas around Spring Valley or Meadows Elementary. Both schools are excellent (very involved parents and professional teachers). Taylor Middle School is very good, and you can't beat Mills High School. Millbrae has a winning combination - a large asian population (which is even demonstrated in the downtown area with small businesses), the schools are great, the neighborhoods safe, and the weather is nice.

Do not live in the neighborhoods which are in Lomita Elementary's home district. Lomita is physically in San Bruno, but part of the Millbrea School District.

I know families who couldn't afford homes in this area back when they were sky high and they rented instead in order to be able to send their kids to the schools. And they're happy with their choice.

I'm in about the same boat as you, with 2 kids and Asian descent. I currently live in Fremont and I plan to be moving to Pleasanton. Why? Because as the other poster said, Fremont schools are either hit or miss (either very good or not so good) and I happen to live in the not-so-good area. With Pleasanton, you can't go wrong with the schools (all are good). I am not sure about the Asian population in Pleasanton, but Fremont I know has a lot.
