I like to complain about the state of public transportation in the Bay Area but ya know, it could be worse....

Haha... I saw that on Ellen yesterday, and was laughing my butt off! They just look so calm about it, and I love the guy (tall blond-haired?) standing backwards & going with the flow - LMAO.

Wow, and I thought the rush hour J-Church I rode yesterday was crowded (I barely made it in the door, and my backpack kept it from closing at first, until a lady standing next to me made more space by partially sitting on the divider between the seats and the doorway).

Seriously though, something like that wouldn't be accepted here, both culturally and probably for safety reasons too. Having strangers touch you so much, let alone push you with all their might, is not normal in the US. Can you imagine how many fights would break out? hehe...

wow, thats insane. ive heard about tokyo's subway being so crowded, but i had not idea they would literally stuff them in like that. and yet its considered a very efficient way of transportation over there.

On a related note, it makes me wonder how many people have to ride Muni or BART for them to pay for themselves.

BART has a very solid farebox recovery ratio because everyone on the train is there because they paid their fare. Muni is pathetic by comparison, freeloaders on every line. People will pile in through the back door of those electric buses.

I can relate to the video of the Asian city. I lived in Tokyo for 5 months, and this was our daily routine. I decided to buy a bike and enjoy my commute to school though.

Some days, after you got on the train, people sort of adjusted so that it wasn't terribly uncomfortable. Oh well, it was an experience that made me love bicycles!

BART does have a good farebox recovery rate, but it is still only around 55-60%. Very few mass transit systems actually generate enough revenue through fares to offset their operating costs. The Hong Kong MTR and the Tokyo Metro are among the few profitable mass transit systems.
