The only one I know of is the "town" of Rossmoor near Alamo/Walnut Creek. Beautiful area, safe, close to San Fran via BART. I would retire there! That's all I know about off hand but I'm sure there are more.

There's also a condo development in San Mateo downtown on Catalpa Avenue which is 55+ only.. and there are lots of them in Watsonville as well, but there's not as much to do there.

Rossmoor is beautiful and has great facilities (golf, tennis, gyms, etc.), but the population there tends toward the older side. Plus it is nearly all condos. There are two active adult communities in Brentwood that are very nice and are primarily houses. Summerset and the new Trilogy at the Vineyards development.
