I have been looking into San Mateo for a while now, planning to move there myself, although I've never been there actually.
But from what I've hear in these forums and elsewhere, the city is very nice. Really good weather, warmer and sunnier than San Francisco. It is quite safe and clean there, but also relatively expensive. However, not as expensive as say nearby Burlingame. And if he has a good job there he should be fine.

I also always thought it's a great location, mid-Peninsula, not far from the big City or San Jose and the Silicon Valley, and the bridge over to the east bay is right there, too. Never far from the ocean or the bay, and of course within like 5 hours you're in the Sierra Nevada mountains for snowboarding in winter, although the summer is very nice there too...
Personally, I've considered most of the bay's places, but am currently pretty much convinced to go to San Mateo.

Default San Mateo is ok

I moved here from San Jose 2 years ago to shorten my husbands commute to SF. San Mateo is nice but so damn expensive. It doesnt seem to matter where in the peninsula you are I think the prices are roughly the same, its just expensive. We rent and live right on the border where downtown starts. There are tons of illegals hanging around waiting for work. I hear the police chasing people down a lot at night esp on weekends. I have never felt unsafe, and Im not saying its unsafe here but just my neighborhood is sketchy. There wernt a lot of choices when we moved and time was up so that why I live where I do. but anyway, my kids go to school way the heck on the other side of town and that area is very nice. Going up on the other side of alemeda de las pulgas.
Beautiful homes. But I hate how san mateo is laid out as a city. That I think is a main issue with the peninsula in general is that El Camino is the main artery and it sucks! There is no quick way to get around town when you want to and I swear half the drivers are old or probably tourists! (okay sorry to vent)
Going toward Foster City is better and looking back I wish we'd have moved on that side. They are improving or trying to I guess the downtown area and beware of the meter maids, crist they are like wardens here! In two years I likely have 10 tickets. They even gave me one for expired tags and I had money in the meter. They should be using that money to get rid of the guys hanging around my street. I for one think the bay area is only for the ultra rich because I know we cant afford to live here anymore.

I grew up in San Mateo, on West Poplar Ave (San Mateo Park). It's a really nice city for the most part, as it's safe, sunny, close to SF & the San Mateo Bridge, lots of shopping, and so forth. There are a few less nice areas, but even those aren't really BAD... mostly on the East side of El Camino (north of Delaware Ave), and the neighborhood known as Sunnybrae.

San Mateo Park is probably the nicest part of town, but fairly expensive and family oriented. San Mateo Hills is also kinda family-ish, but more reasonably priced with lots of rentals... your son should look near Hillsdale Mall, west of El Camino and up near College of San Mateo. LOTS of rentals there, and the prices are fairly decent for this area. It's very safe and quiet, the bus runs back and forth to El Camino, and you have a great mall (Hillsdale) nearby - I spent many adolescent years at that mall, LOL. He should also look on E. Hillsdale Blvd. east of 101 @ Norton... there are some nice large apartment complexes there, and I once almost rented a unit on Los Prados.

There are lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of apartments and duplexes in the eastern half of San Mateo. Many of them were built in the '50s and are falling to pieces, and they'll still charge you an arm and a leg just based on where they are. Newer complexes will take your first born too - I've seen some charging $2000 for a one-bedroom. If I could afford that I'd be living in San Francisco where at least rent control will keep them from continuing to gouge me in a similar way for the rest of my life.

It's a great town, though. Nothing against it other than the expense.
