Not sure... it's just always been a no-no! And we've had a few heated debates about that here, so it might be a touchy subject.

wiki puts it as nicknames for the city.

San Francisco, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

anyone who has a problem with these nicknames, please provide logical reasons. I find the nicknames san fran and frisco cool.

the only one I can think of isnt really an abbreviation of San Francisco.

Many people in Northern California just call it "The City"

I don't get it either, people in SF can be so provincial sometimes. The vast majority will tell you never to call it "Frisco" or "San Fran" but no one will actually ever no why or have any reason for it. It's just a "no no" and that couldn't be a more stupid reason, and it's not even a reason really. As long as you aren't trying to disrespect the city then call it whatever you want, people can just be really full of themselves with their anti "Frisco/San Fran" BS.

yeah,
its quite common in hood areas around the bay area for young people to call the city "frisco". A lot of local urban apparel brands use it too.

"The city" just as easy to say as "frisco" anyway. I personally like that unwritten rule. It peeves me that everything must be shortened nowadays in order to be lazy.
