Well I grew up in Walnut Creek and I still think it. And growing up here I've seen it change more towards being like that.

Being pretentious is not always necessarily a bad thing. I know this King for example. He is extremely formal and liks pomp and circumstance, but still generally speaking a nice guy.

In the same vein, Many San Franciscans can be quite provincial and boastful about SF, but the same people are champions of the environment, human rights, freedom of speech, gay rights, animal rights and a whole plethora of other issues.

People are not one dimensional.

Meanwhile the poor and working class are driven out of the city. Where is the support for affordable housing? How many "Luxury" Condo's can they build?

You're talking about issues that aren't related to individuals - that's the government's fault, not ours! Believe me, if we had our way houses would cost under $300K, and we'd all be happy homeowners. Montclair had a very good and valid point, that people aren't one-dimensional... and most do all they can on a personal level, but unfortunately we don't have the power to change things like cost-of-living (unless we all move away or something). Speaking of letting things slide, notice how far off-topic I've let this get?

Plenty of poor people are provincial when it comes to San Francisco as well.

Housing Affordability is another issue wouldnt you say?

Some responsibility falls on the people who move into the city willing to pay the outrageous prices for a place just to have a SF address. What about the land lords who jack up the rents sometimes 5 times in price once a person leaves. Wait what was the original post about again? lol

"San Francisco" is so mellifluous, why shorten it to an ear-rattling clunker out of laziness? (Same goes for "Cali.") Both, I think, were created by tone-deaf flight attendants. Not the best cultural arbiters. (Besides, the first thing a local will say is "Not from here, right?")

As for “Frisco,” you probably can get away with it if you’ve got piercings and tattoos and are using it ironically. If you’ve got a polo shirt and/or pastel shorts, you’re just oblivious.

Other local laments: “SOMA” and “bridge and tunnel crowd.” Both are NY derivatives, which made sense only to transplanted New Yorkers who are under the impression that everything begins and ends in NY. (“South of Market” works fine. And “bridge and tunnel” makes no sense, since SF is on a peninsula.)
