About the only people I've her call it "San Fran" with any regularity always seem to have an Eastern accent. When you're in the Bay Area its "The City", like it or not.

I don't mind 'frisco', but SanFran just sounds awful

No need to be snarky...just stating my opinion, that's all. Isn't that what this forum is for?

The FACT that nobody here calls it "San Fran" is not a matter of opinion.

Native San Fran'ers have a pretty large inferiority complex, which makes them very eager to exclude 'outsiders' and 'newcomers' from their culture.

Us newcomers could give two flaps about whether it makes us look like we're not from here. 'Cause we're not from here.

Maybe I'm old school but I still call it Yerba Buena. Keep in mind though I'm 175 years old.

I think calling it "San Fran" doesn't really reflect the underlying essence/vibe of the city. I heard the city was built by the wealthy after many people struck it rich during the gold rush, and was established during the olden times when people behaved and spoke in a very proper way. Even though we are a long way from the aristocratic families of the Victorian era, I think the city has an underlying "bourgeois" appropriateness about it and the nickname "San Fran" wouldn't be considered a proper way of referring to the city. The full name of "San Francisco" or simply "SF" fits that proper form of speaking. That's just my own hypothesis.
