This may seem like a strange question, but if your college-aged son were moving into an apartment and needed a bed (twin-sized) that would not be too heavy to move (he'll be on the third floor) or hard to put together, where would you recommend he get it?

The apartment is in Daly City. We (his parents) will be visiting him from CT to provide him with transportation (a rental car) and to help him, but I don't know where to go look. I'm hoping to spend under $200 (really, this doesn't need to be a quality bed-just something that will get his mattress off the floor). While delivery would be good, it can also be tricky since we'll only be there a couple of days and after that my son is often in classes and not in the apartment.

Any advice, suggestions?

Also, I found this place called westcoast clearance where I can get a mattress. Anybody ever get anything there? Bargain or junk?

How about a futon? Those are cheap and versatile, since you can use it as a couch in a pinch. House of Futons, San Francisco, CA 94102 (http://local.sanfrancisco.com/House+of+Futons.327667.105447051.home.html - broken link)

Believe it or not, the Goodwill often has new mattresses for really cheap... I got one for $20 once, still in the packaging, but that was like 12 years ago. Might be worth a shot, though!

Ehhh!! Those are really old mattresses that have been recovered and placed in plastic bags. Under the new cover, there can be bed bugs and stains from "bodily fluids".

Thanks for the tips! I am hunting down an Ikea bed from Craigslist. That seems to be the way to go.

I must have gotten lucky, because mine was clearly brand new... still had a tag from Macy's, if I remember correctly. But yeah, it's probably a crap-shoot with the Goodwill stuff.
