I am going to be in town this weekend and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for an excellent restaurant in San Francisco. I figure locals know better than anyone what is excellent. In particular, I am looking for a good seafood place, but any suggestion would be more than welcome. Thanks a lot.

My favorite seafood place in San Francisco is Scomas down on the Wharf. All the other so-called restaurants there (Fisherman's Wharf) are krap but Scomas is wonderful.

I just moved to the east coast in February. I lived in the Bay Area for 12 years, 8 in the city.

Good luck! I am sure many other people will chime in.

The new Waterbar on the Embarcadero down by the Bay Bridge is very, very good.

Thank you all for the replies. I really appreciate it.

mdwstrnkid: I am probably most interested in Seafood, Italian, or French restaurants, but any suggestion would be very helpful. As far as price range goes, anything under $35-40 for an entree is fair game. Thanks.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Quince: Upscale French/Italian restaurant in Pacific Heights. 1-star Michelin restaurant. Very well known for their seasonal ingredients and house made pastas
Welcome to Quince Restaurant

Range: Unassuming restaurant in the Mission District serving elegant, well-executed American cuisine at very affordable prices. Also a 1-star Michelin restaurant.
Range Restaurant - San Francisco

Chapeau!: A hidden gem of a restaurant in Richmond District serving up French cuisine. The food is great and the service is spectacular. Note that the owners, Philippe and Ellen Gardelle, are in the process of moving some of the cuisine from Chapeau! to Clementine, another French restaurant in the Richmond District which they recently purchased, so YMMV.
Chapeau! (broken link)

Swan Oyster Depot: Long-time San Francisco serving up fresh, delicious seafood. There's almost always a line out the door for a seat at the white marble bar, but it's well worth the wait.

There's an old place called the Sixteen Mile House in Millbrae that has steaks like nothing you've ever had in your life. I've never been anywhere in San Francisco that could hold a candle to it!

I hate seafood, so I'll be of no help there... but I LOVE Italian food, and we have a slew of those in SF! North Beach is obviously the place to go, since that's our "Italian district," and they have a ton of great restaurants. My personal favorite is Mangarosa (MANGAROSA), which is actually a Brazilian-Italian fusion... they have these Brazilian cheeseballs that are to die for, and the entrees & service are excellent too. There's also the famous North Beach restaurant (North Beach Restaurant) which is always a crowd-pleaser. Some other good ones up there are Fior D'Italia, Stinking Rose, Moose's, North Beach Pizza, and the very pricey Joe DiMaggio's.

As for my usual eating habits, I tend to stick with my neighborhood favorites - nothing fancy or super expensive, unless someone else is paying. Some of my usuals are Spicy Bite (Welcome to Spicy Bite Indian Restaurant) on Mission & Cortland, Ling Ling Cuisine on San Bruno Ave, Pad Thai on Mission, Escape from New York Pizza (multiple locations, I usually go to Castro), Bagdad Cafe on Market & Castro, and good old Mel's Diner for burgers. Lots of options to choose from here!
