Default Moving to San Francisco Area

Hello All,
My mom and I are planning on moving out for Florida and want to go to the San Fran area. Can you please give some suggestions on safe, good area's to look into. We are looking for a 2-3 bedroom with 2 baths for about 1500 a month. We need the commute time to be relatively short since my mom will be working in San Fran.

Any help you guys can give would be appreciated!

You're not going to find a 2 or 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment in the SF Bay Area for $1500/month.

Default Area we are looking

We've been looking in Napa County, Sonoma and Marion County. We aren't looking to live in San Fran or the Bay area humboldtrat. We are looking to live in one of those three counties. I have actually found several places to live but I am looking for the best neighborhoods.

Yup - I didn't a quick search on Craigslist and the cheapest 3BR in San Francisco (other than through the Office of Housing) is $1950/month in Bayview. If you want something in a more decent part of the city, the cheapest 3BR that I was able to find was $2200 for an apartment in the Richmond district, but it only comes with one bathroom.

What's your definition of a short commute to SF?

In Florida we drove an hour to our work...so that or anything less would be nice.

Commute times between SF and Napa or Sonoma counties would be over an hour and require crossing bridges (which slows things down). Remember, gas is $4.60/gal here and bridge tolls are about $80/month. Marin county would be closer, but apartments are about as expensive in Marin as in most parts of the Bay Area.

For the size apartment you are looking for, expect about $2200 or more in a decent neighborhood.

You're nuts to be commuting from Napa or Sonoma counties to SF. Sorry to put it bluntly but you are dismissing fair and realistic warnings out of hand so maybe that's what you need.

Hope you can find someone equally nuts to carpool with if you go through with it. At least then you won't be spending as much to get to work and back as you pay for rent.

I commuted from SF to Napa for 4 months... even with it being a reverse commute & my late work schedule (12-9pm), the drive was 50-60 minutes each way. Going the other direction at normal work hours, expect at least 1.5-2 hours each direction. You might find something closer to your price range in the north Peninsula, like San Bruno or SSF... Oakland is also a possibility, and maybe parts of Richmond.
