Default Cool SF neighborhoods

Hi all~ I'm moving to SF for work, but not so familiar with the area (moving from out of state).

I'm 28, female, single, and want to be in a nice, safe, and lively neighborhood. A studio is fine, and I can pay about $1500/month. My work is at Embarcadero...

I've found a few things in "Lower Nob Hill," but I understand that's not as consistently nice as straight-up Nob Hill. Anyone have any suggestions as to good streets vs. bad?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, cool and safe don't often go together, unless you have $2000/mo to spare! "Lower Nob Hill" is basically the Tenderloin, but there are some decent parts... anything along Geary should be OK, just a little noisy for my taste.

Do you want to be downtown specifically, or will you live farther out (still in city limits)? If it's the latter, you might consider neighborhoods like Bernal Heights, Glen Park, and the inner Richmond... maybe Noe Valley or Castro too, but they're probably a bit expensive. Other parts like SoMa, lower Haight & the Mission are a bit livelier, which also means you'll see more crime and dirt.

Let's see.. in Lower Nob Hill, Stockton St is great for Chinatown.. Bush Street is good.. Clay St is fabulous but that may no longer be LNH.. In that area the north-south streets will be highly inclined, the west-east ones flatter so usually preferable.

Outer Richmond.

It's almost like a separate city, actually quiet and peaceful much of the time. Foggy, yea sure it is, but it's just a stones throw from the beach.
