I must confess... I have met more than one friend that way.

that's awesome. i can't think of a non-college town where that's a real possibility. i'm going to have to try it... visiting sf for a week later this month.

Hmm, darn, I should have asked this question on this forum a year ago. All the helpful tips. I will try it. Thanks.

All of my friends that had moved to the city have moved back to the east bay within a year or two after living in the city and none of them seem to have any new friends that we didn't know from before or they were college buddies from somewhere else like Chico State. But other transplants seem to find a way, but the city isn't exactly known for nice, outgoing people. Try the East Bay, I think the people are a little friendlier, more down to earth, and less pretentious.

don't knock it before you try it though. the bay has a special vibe about it some people get, some don't. It's all good though, there are so many cool, chill people there. Give it time and give it some effort. I've met people that have moved here from elsewhere from other parts of the country and made it there home for the rest of their lives.
I give you that much. The East Bay is better when it comes to people who are more down to Earth.

well you can't join a sports league, because any traditional sport that involves a ball is pretty much considered sexist in SF, if it involves a frisbee or hacky sack it's ok, but you'll be playing with a bunch of people you'd never be friends with on the east coast

if you're gay, then you need to go to the castro now, right now

if you're asian, go to the sunset right now

if you're a normal American who eats red meat more than once a year, you need to come back to the east coast if you enjoy the presence of other people

I have no better suggestion than what some of the others have added. If you're a nice person you should have no problem meeting lots of people here. Getting them not to flake on you long enough to form lasting solid relationships is the hard part.

It's not that easy in SF.It's not like the East Coast where its much easier to meet people. You kinda gotta go out of your way to meet people sometimes.People in SF aren't the most outgoing. YOU have to be the one that is outgoing, and spark up a conversation.

You have to be more than outgoing. You have to have to be persistent, have thick skin and not take rejection and people flat out ignoring you personally.

Go to the "Castro" district with your pants down around your ankles. You will meet lots of folks. Ripley
