I've been in Austin for the past two years and for a variety I basically hate it.

*ducks various pieces of furniture*
I'm already subletting my place here starting next week.

Anyway, I was all set on spending the summer back in New York City but for some reason I keep drifting through the San Francisco sublet ads, looking for that magic last-minute ad.

The only thing is that I don't know much of... anything about San Francisco. If this were to happen it would be a move-into-town-for-a-few-months scenario.

I wouldn't have a car and while I'm all for learning to love public transportation (especially after Austin, yeesh) what would be a good area to narrow down on in this magic Craigslist quest?

Walkable.... Public transportation... a FUN area that is. Not a sketchy back alley but not a these-are-pretty-little-houses-to-look-at-on-a-walk either. Just some place that's central enough to meet people, go out on walks, maybe find a job and that's not gonna be all that expensive either. 24, male.

And yes, I realize that I might be absolutely asking for the moon.

Really depends on whether you get a job, where the job is, and how much you make and thus can afford to pay in rent. "Not gonna be all that expensive" doesn't exist anymore in da Bay.
