Question Moving to Berkeley, bay area

Hi I am a respiratory therapist who got a job in the berkeley. I will be making around 60k. I am in mid 20's female. Looking for a safe and fairly reasonable apartment around berkeley area. I have just been to berkeley and I checked out lafayette and walnut creek and it seemed pretty decent. Was running out of time so couldnt check orinda. I will be working nights so, safety is an issue. My work timings are 630 pm to 7am. I will be moving around mid september. i would appreciate any suggestions. I don't want to drive more than 20-25 minutes. I had to rule out oakland and richmond because of my parents and am iffy about emeryville. Any suggestions would be appreciated. A little quieter apartments will be good as i sleep in the mornings and I like grocery shops close by. I am a fairly quiet person who like coffe shops a lot and movies and malls once in a while. Thanks

Rockridge area in Oakland. Why did you rule out Oakland? Don't understand.

Oakland has been voted on of the best cities to live in the United States in several high profile publications. Here is one. Can't find the other link source I am looking for that goes into depth why Oakland is a good place to live.

I think pretty much all of Alameda is safe, but maybe the area that borders Oakland is "less desireable." I don't know much about that town, but know people who live there & are very happy. At least traffic won't be too much of an issue, considering your work hours. Speaking of which, is your workplace near a BART station? If so you should live near a station and just BART it - so much better than driving! And why aren't you considering Berkeley itself? That's a nice town, and is a more interesting place for someone your age... no offense to the cities, but I think you'd be awfully bored in Orinda, Lafayette, etc.

berkeley seems a little more expensive. i can bart on weekdays because they have free shuttle from my workplace to the bart station. but on weekends they dont have the service and i will have to work weekends sometime. I understand your point of berkeley being a little more interesting. I want a little quieter place as I would need my sleeps in the morning. i think i will square in on alameda just because its relatively close to other cities. and airport and i have quite a few frnds in milpitas sanjose so it would be easy to commute from there compared to somewhere north or north east of berkeley.

Alameda sounds like a good place for you! The commute will be easy considering your hours, and it should be nice and quiet. Berkeley is a great town, but you're right - it's a little more on the expensive side.

Check out Albany. I moved here 3months ago and love it. It is quiet, safe, and borders berkeley. You can get a 1 bd for about $1-1.2K per month. We have plenty of restaurants, and 2 movie houses.

I have some friends who just moved to Alameda, they are in their late 20s. They absolutely LOVE it there. It is quiet, but has a great nightlife. Rent is reasonable, for the Bay Area, and it has a lot to do. They play bingo on the weekends, go fishing at the rockwall, there is the USS Hornet to visit and plenty of live music on the weekends.
